86 740 Turbo:
Set out today to replace oxygen sensor. It loosens easily to my surprise, the hard part is done, pull it out from top holding the wires, it seems stuck, yank it carelessly (what could I harm?). Put in new sensor and go to pull wires up-- why is that thing below distributor hanging out? Oh no. I think that's the hall sensor! Man, I feel dumb... car won't start.
Fruitlessly try to connect the right-angle part to housing plate with distributor on. Then remove distributor and wiggle mirror into area to view. All three wires seem connected from sensor to right angle connector. One terminal is exposed, so put electrical tape around entire connector to cover it.
Then I also notice that insulation about a 8 inches away from the above connection is exposed and decomposed. As far as I can determine it's the ground (black) wire. Tape over two exposed sections about 3/8" long. Maybe they were shorting out?
Car starts! Drive around, car dies while driving on bumpy side street... can't get to restart. Seems fairly expected from what I've been reading in FAQ and forum.
Monday's plan: Buy new connector part number 1346793 and replace.
My concern: Will this really solve my problem? I'm assuming electrical connection is good but didn't test. Yes, the connector is dangling out of distributor.
Maybe sensor itself was damaged? Or maybe wires are shorting out?
