dies when car is half full 1987

My 1987 240dl volvo died when tank was half empty. It did it a second time at the half way mark I put a gallon of gas in it and it ran perfectly to the station. The last time it started to spit and sputter at the quarter empty while pulling a slight hill. It got me home . It starts perfectly and does not do it when idling or driving to my Dad;s house 2 doors down.
I changed the pickup tube and gas pump in the tank about 5 years ago now it is doing it again. I changed the mass meter thing and that black accordian hose leading to it about 5 years ago also. The mechanic changed my overdrive module right before this happened could they have bumped the module in there that controls the fuel? Thanks any help appreciated. Linda
