Will someone explain overdrive to me and how do I know if it works 200 1987

Okay I have two 240 models. A 1991 245 and a 1987 240. I try to keep them in the best running shape possible. Can someone explain to me how to use Overdrive ,these are my 4th 200 series I've owned and 7th volvo overall. I have never used them before. They are automatics. So do I press that buttin on the side of gear shift and the arrow comes on, when do I do this and what shoudl I expect. With gas prices going up a guy at work who has a honda says that with his Overdrive on he get extra miles on highway and city, can my old cars do the same? What can I expect? I really don't know.
