Intermittent failure 740 M46 OD 700

My 740 runs fine but some times the engine loses power and will only run at idle speed for a few minutes. Tach goes down slowly and shows idle. When i try to accelarete it dies and restarts immediately.

After a few minutes it starts running fine and I can drive quite a lot without problems.

I changed the in tank pump about 1 year ago.

Has anyone tried substituting the in tank pump for an outside combination pump/filter? May be a nice idea.

Have checked the RSR relay and driven with the red/redgreen cables jumpered and get the same so I don't think it is the RSR ground.

I am going to try and set up a gas pressure meter that I can see when driving but do not want to have a high pressure gas hose going into the car. Sounds like a dangerous proposition for driving around.
