89 240 kickdown cable broken, does this affect the shifting into overdrive? 200

I took the overdrive solenoid off with express purpose of cutting a groove between the 2 holes...however then I find the solenoid works quite well with 12volts directly applied, back in the car however, the transmission will not shift into overdrive even though I wired 12v straight to the solenoid...then I notice the kickdown cable is broken, I remove the pan and can see it no longer even in sight.....now my question is will the fact that the cable is no longer connected inside the transmission affect shifting into overdrive? NAPA can have one here in 3-4 days to the tune of $45 .......thanks in advance, Kris
