WHAT HAPPENED car quits.....Timing belt ADVANCED 6 teeth 700 1991

So my wife's 745T dies after stopping on the exit ramp off of the Interstate ( there is a light at the end of the ramp) Tow truck after roadside attempts to restart (Pull on wires, disconnect AMM, check vacuum lines, fuel guage, fuses etc.)
Check 1) car has good spark

Check 2) Good fuel pressure

Check 3)HMMMM maybe the Catalytic died remove O2 sensor

BLAH BLAH BLAH

the timing belt is ADVANCED 6 teeth HUH!

pull valve cover, cam ok

Put everything back where they belong and the engine purrs.

Belt is only 9mos./ 5000 miles old. everything is/ was tight.

car is running with the timing cover off the belt wants to walk forward a bit.

Gonna put on a new timing belt, and see what happens BUT the Question is

WHAT HAPPENED??? It seems to me that things would have had to go almost, but not quite all the way around for them to have ended up where they did. I do not wish for this to happen again. and don't understand what might have happened?

IDEAS!!
