Re-tapping oil pan plug hole on 240 200 1993

I am going to re-tap the oil drain plug on the 240 soon. I have learned the original is a 3/4-16 size. Does anyone have any suggestions on the next size plug/tap up to go to when doing this? Bear in mind, I am not going to use a rubber plug or a tap "kit" for this job.

Guess I would like to pick the brains of those who have retapped their pan.

Thanks.
