Fuel pump. 140-160

Ok so, the earlier D jet pumps have a 3 port pattern, the later pattern has only 2. So it's my understanding that the earlier, 3 port pattern pump has an outflow channel to redistribute fuel into the fuel tank but, in the later style pump, the fuel returns back into the pump via the inlet channel. So, does it really matter which type of pump I can install? Would the actual fuel tank need modifying to accommodate the 3 port system?
