Turbo very hot and smoking 700 1990

Hi,

I've been going through some monstrous repairs on my 1990 Volvo 740 Turbo. I started by having an unemployed mechanic put a 1989 b230ft motor and turbo in the car. It was the same motor that was in it before but required a number of things to be switched in order to plug up right to the computer so he wound up swapping the entire intake manifold and injectors, some components around the turbo because it was mounted differently, and the flexplate. After all was said and done he had put the flexplate in without realizing it's role in timing the engine and over the last week, I've been taking the transmission out and got it back to where it needs to be. Everything back together, I thought I had finally reached the finish line today and the car started right up and drove. I gave it a quick spin up the road no more than a quarter mile, heard a little rattling and parked her back in the driveway and saw a formidable amount of smoke coming from under the hood. When I opened it I saw it coming directly from the turbo, not white but not black. The turbo was steaming hot, more so than I think the car was and the smoke continued for maybe five minutes. I was so confused I just had to try it again and the car started right up and ran at idle, sounding good for maybe 5 minutes before I saw a tiny bit of smoke from the turbo. Then I pressed the accelerator and the turbo was back to smoking incredibly.

I've been searching the forums for an answer to this but and surprised to see almost everyone had said their turbos stopped smoking under acceleration and smoked at idle which seems to be the opposite of my brief experience with mine. Does anyone have any ideas what can be happening and where I go from here? Also, before I purchased the used motor it was in another car and I listened to it run and played with the throttle for at least ten minutes inside with no smoke from this turbo. Any help would be incredibly appreciated. Thanks for making it through this long posting.

-Ryan
