89 240 w/ 258,155 cumulative odometer and trip odom. quit 200

My old 89's trip odometer and cumulative odometer just stopped functioning today. Speedometer works fine as does everything else on the console. Is this definitely the little gears that tend to go on these cars after time? Is it a difficult job to change them if that's the case? If that is the problem, who's the best source for obtaining these? Also, can the car be driven while working on this job? I tend to pick at things- I do some, then come back to it, do a little more etc?
Art, you wouldn't have one of your step by step process pictorials for this , would you?
