1994 940 A/C Compressor Squeak / Warbling Sound? 900

A few days ago I recharged the a/c on my 1994 940 with a couple of cans of 134a freon. It works better than it did - though the blower cuts in and out so I think I have some electrical / connection issue to deal with.
However, on 2 occasions now while driving at around 50-55 I heard a screeching / warbling sound -- I think from the compressor.
I checked the FAQs here and that is indeed the sign of a distressed compressor.
Assuming this is correct -- I'm afraid this could mean opening the system, replacing the compressor (and most probably much of the rest of the a/c system).

Do I have the option to just turn the a/c off and address this next year when I have more time and money -- or can a problem like this render the car undriveable in the short to medium term?

Thanks,

Rob
