Front strut cartridge, can I switch to gas type? 200 1982

I need to replace front struts inserts on my 1982 DL. Can I switch to gas type as on there is on my 240 1991? Original inserts on 1982 are non gas type.

There seem to be all kinds of length among various brands and that get me confused as I do not want be stuct to return parts.
