valve clearance question 900 1992

So my remanufactured cylinder head arrived today. It looks great, and is an identical casting to my old one, but the camshaft in it doesn't have the slots in the rear to mount to the distributor. This is odd, because the number stamped on it is identical to that of my old camshaft.

The rebuild place said I could just switch camshafts, which I'm perfectly happy to do since mine is in quite good shape. But they said that the valve lash would have to be checked. I'm not sure this is possible with the head off, and I don't have experience doing this.

So my question is, can I do this with the head off, and if not - can I put everything back together, fire up the car, and then take it somewhere to have it done or do it myself? Is there a possibility that the valve clearance would be way out, and that damage could be done once I started it? I'd rather not have to ship the whole thing back to Florida; the car has been sitting for a couple of weeks, and it will take at least an additional week or two for an exchange to happen with shipping time. I've got to get on the road fairly soon!
