distributer re-install? 700 1992

Just got the head back from the shop and mad at myself for forgetting to remove the distributer. Now the machinist has removed it with markings or pictures and I can't figure out how to get it back in. I can see how it totally could be put in 180 degrees off. I can't get it to slide in either way. It goes in till I can still see the top of the large o-ring but no further. What's the secret? Do I have to tap it in? There is the plastic alignment piece in one of the screws so it should be reasonably close in timing if I could just figure out how to get it to go in all the way. I did draw picture of cams in tdc so if I rotate cam to that position the rotor should be firing #1, right? But how to slide it in?
thanks,
Robb McC
