Recently my 82 245 has been experiencing a problem when the engine is hot and the ambient temp is over 80F. Stop and Go traffic seem to exaggerate the problem. What I experience is a feeling like the fuel pump(s) cut out momentarily. If I pull over and wait 10-20 minutes, I’m able to drive for a little while before this issue comes back. When it starts behaving like this, it still idles fine, and revs up like normal, however, once under a load (to accelerate) it starts to buck and acts like it’s not getting fuel. I noticed a less exaggerated form of this issue once a couple of months ago when I was in slow moving traffic, but once I got moving at speed the issue subsided (seems to be heat related).
What I’ve already eliminated are in-tank pump/low fuel as well as wires/plugs. I swapped in a different coil yesterday and that didn’t change anything. I do notice the coil(s) feels hot (maybe too hot). I noticed that the 82 has a condenser/capacitor connected to the negative side of the coil, where as my 86 does not. I don’t suspect the main pump as I replaced that a couple of years ago. The fuel pump relays don’t get overly hot in this situation either (so for now I don’t suspect this is the problem). Also, the main pump doesn’t seem overly hot, nor does the LH1 module. I recently did a replacement of the intake manifold and at the same time rebuilt the wiring harness. Other than this new issue, it has been running great, so I don’t suspect issues with the upgraded wire harness. At that time I tested the hall sensor and it was working as expected (about 3 months ago). Of course, I tested it when it was cold so I can’t say that it isn’t failing when it starts to get hot. I’ve also checked the signal wire running from the coil to the
I didn’t have this problem last summer- prior to the upgrade of the intake manifold or wire harness. The only things that have changed from this upgrade were the following:
Intake Manifold with Injectors, FPR, CSI, throttle body from a 90 240 + new gasket,
Engine harness (rebuilt by me)
Tube routing to/from the IAC
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
