What type of paint would you use? 200

On my 1988 240 I want to change the color of the "lower" rocker panel. You know the area under the doors and butt cheeks that is usually grey.I want to paint it black but don't know what type of paint is best. The body shop says it is a special paint that does not chip and holds up to salt and gravel.I was thinking of just using rustoleum, matte finish, spray or rattle can.Any other ideas? If the body shop gets the paint I will need a spray gun, etc. Also every time I go to the painter he is "busy" ,too small of a job I guess.I want it to hold up just as well as the stuff that is on there right now.All info welcomed.
