J-type overdrive valve body differences 120-130

Were there 3 or 2 different valve bodies designs? I see '76 to June '83 and May '83 to '93, but what about before '76?

Is the relief valve the only difference? Are the parts interchangeable (Can you put any year relief valve assembly into any year valve body)? Are all the O-rings interchangeable?

I remember a couple of years ago using two overdrive units to make one good unit, and the valve body I used was from a later ('76-'83) OD unit, and I mixed it with an earlier (pre-76) OD unit. The unit works perfectly to this day (M41).
