I prefer a pressure washer on low; or a carwash as XRAYBOB suggests. I don't like degreaser-like chemicals and avoid them.

I try to wash every motor I work on. With the engine cold (that's the only problem w/ the carwash approach).

a clean motor makes maintenance easier for me. And helps w/ diagnostics. Especially on cars not my own.
