driver door won't lock 200 1989

Got the power locks working -- except that the driver's door lock button won't go down unless I push the latch mechanism, on the edge of the door, into such a position that the door won't even shut. Same thing when I try to lock it with the key.

This sound familiar to anybody? I can't make any sense of the diagrams in the book, or the way all those parts move around when I play with them.
