IAC Operation 200 1990

Can someone provide me with a good source of information on the operational principles of the IAC? I understand that it allows air to bypass the closed butterfly valve in the throttle body at idle, but I'm looking to learn what triggers it, when, and under what conditions. All the sources I've looked at (including Bentley) give plenty of info on diagnostics, cleaning, repair and replacement, but I'm hoping to gain a real understanding of how it works.

Ultimately, I'm trying to track down the source of a high, surging idle issue on an otherwise smooth-running car, but I'm also hoping to learn a thing or three along the way.

Thanx in advance,
--EdM.
