timing marks

Hi All,

Need little help with the timing marks on 1990 740GL.
I hope I do not enrage someone who has seen this question come up again and again for the past 20 years.
The car is consistently running a bit rough and has lost power. Going over 3000RPM is close to impossible and seems to do well if the gas pedal is not pressed too much. Reading a lot of posts suggests that timing belt might have skipped.
I aligned the camshaft white dot with the notch on the timing cover.
How does the crankshaft alight?
There is a mark in the inner grove between the belts - I tried to align it with the mark on the timing belt cover (there is 20||||10|||| plastic thing sticking out and then behind it to the right is a mark on the timing belt cover - 0 I assume)
The mark does not align at all - it is all ways to the left as if it jumped 5 teeth or so. How is the car even running in that case?
