Cam and auxiliary shaft gears have marks on the gear and are matched to the mark/notch in the plastic cover.
To align the crankshaft, the outer washer, the one with notch on the outside edge and the alignment cutout for the protruding nub on the front face of the crankshaft gear has to be in place.
If you look carefully at the area above the crankshaft, there is a small raised area on the aluminum front crankshaft seal retainer which is the alignment mark.
If you imagine a straight line from the camshaft down to the crankshaft, you should see the alignment mark.
On most new timing belts there are lines on the belt to help you with alignment.
The lines match up great to the cam and auxiliary gear marks.
But the belt mark for the crankshaft gear will not be touching the crankshaft gear when it is properly aligned.
You could try turning the engine backwards, but I prefer to just count the number of teeth exposed and match that number to the alignment position on the crankshaft gear.
