plug wire question 200 1991

Basic question, I know, but maybe you've been there too. I just changed my plug wires, and the new wires won't fit on the plugs with the little metal nipples on. So I unscrewed the nipples, and was able to put the wires back on, and all seems well. Ever heard of such craziness? (The wires are Ultra 8mm from NAPA--bright blue!, and the plugs are Bosch Platinum). Thanks for any help. Oh, and there is a metal jacket, or sleeve over the plug boot, i guess for noise supression?
