need info on wagon tailgate latch part 200 1989

'89 245 (wagon)- previous owners took some parts out of the tailgate latch mechanism. The dealership was actually able to order some of the parts for less than a dollar (!) but not the "dowel". From this crappy diagram, it looks like all I'm missing is that dowel and one of those clips to hold it on (forgot to order two). But that seems like an awful long way for a dowel to go, and that it might get bound up when I try to lock the tailgate... Did they give me the right rod going from the lock cylinder over to the latch button? This picture is when the rod is farthest over toward the latch button (in the unlocked position??).

Could anybody send me a picture of their intact latch mechanism?

thanks
