Ghost in the brake system. 200

Yesterday, my son lost the brakes (1990 240 auto) on I495 just west of I95 in N. MA. Upon application, the pedal went all the way to the floor. I am grateful that he had the foresight to use the e-brake and get to the side of the road. He had it towed to a Volvo dealer in Haverhill MA; the service dept. was open on Saturday. They looked at the car for more than an hour and found nothing wrong. No fluid leaks, no evidence of master or slave cylinder leaks, no caliper leaks, full fluid reservoir and the discs are not warped. The brakes are fine now.

My son was driving in stop and go to low speed when this happened. He said he did not smell anything. he drove the rest of the way home, approximately 100 miles without incident.

I will take the car to an independent Volvo shop; but this all seems very strange.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks.
