'93 240 driver's side tail light 200

Ciao y'all,
My question concerns which lights should come on when the brakes are applied on my '93 240 Sedan. I changed the circuit board on the driver's side tail light today, and when I was checking the lights, I noticed that different lights on each side light up when the brake pedal is pressed. On the driver's side, the light closest to the license plate on the top row lights up. On the passenger's side, the light furthest from the license plate on the bottom row lights up. I've checked the brake lights before, and never noticed this. Which lights are supposed to come on when the brakes are applied? They were working symmetrically yet intermittently before I change the board. Hence, the changing of the board. Now what's going on?
Anyone?
Thanks for any ideas,
Rob
