1995 940 headlamp socket and warning bulb dimming

Just thought I'd mention that when I saw my bulb failure warning bulb dimming (on the dashboard) it seemed weird since it was "in limbo". When I checked the drivers side headlamp socket I found the problem. The headlight was dimming too. The socket has 3 connectors (female) and the black one (ground?) was brownish and the plastic nearby was a bit melted. So I ended up splicing in a new socket - not an original part - just an advance auto generic socket. But my question is: how are we supposed to repair this? Cut out the old one? Or is there a more professional way? I needed the car quick so I didn't have time to wait for parts.
