Remove drive shaft support bracket for body work? 200 1984

There is significant rust where the drive shaft support bracket bolts to my car's underside. I'm worried that if the rust isn't stopped, the bracket may not have anything to support it.

Is it possible to just remove the bracket w/o disturbing the bearing and spring? Would I have to support the drive shaft with jack stands? I've never changed out the bearings nor taken apart the drive shaft, so I'm leery about messing with it.

Thanks much.
