Questions RE: Auto Trans & Shift Linkage 200 1993

The sickness knows no cure - I just bought another 240, a decent '93 Wagon with about 140K. In 31 years of driving 240's, this is my first one with an automatic transmission. My plans are to eventually swap the 5-spd from our well-used '90 wagon. Until that time, I'll be sorting it out, so, I'm sure I'll be posting my share of questions regarding this car.

Questions:

1/ At 140 Kmi, what servicing should be done to the automatic trans?

2/ The shifter operates as if there are no detents or lockouts (other than the starting interlock); the shifter can be moved to any position at any time without depressing the large button on top. Since there is the danger that careless selection of a gear could result in some serious damage, I have to do something about the gear selector. Do these selectors wear out or what might I find whenever I am able to tear into the assembly?

Please forgive me for asking these questions. I have 5 broken ribs, so about all I am able to do right now is to plan for the work which is needed or else to direct the efforts of others.

Thanks, one and all,
Rich
