what is a symptom of a bad torque converter in the 03-71L 900

I'm about to swap out a bad trans in a 1994 940 wagon. Its a 03-71L. I'm hoping my good used 03-70L is compatible. I only have the torque converter in the existing 71L. Do they go bad? Can I just clean it and use it with the 70L unit I have? Is there anything I should look for when I examine it. They seem pretty straightforward. There shouldn't be clunks if I shake it?
Thanks to Spook for his comments. New fluids didn't help.
