Electrical problems surrounding the manual tranmission stalk? 200 1989

Hi, everyone.

Last weekend, I had an episode where the car wouldn't start at all. I wiggled the transmission shifter (there is a little play in park) and it will start if it in the right place. That appears to be the neutral safety switch that could use a bit of cleaning (something I'm putting off for this coming weekend).

Earlier this week, however, I noticed that the transmission wouldn't switch from third gear into overdrive. I replaced the relay but it has no effect.

Yesterday, the No. 12 fuse (8 amps, for the reverse lights and for the air conditioner) started blowing out.

Is there one solution for this having to do with the shifter/neutral safety switch, or is this an unfortunate series of events that need to be tackled one by one?
