Yes you bent valves as others have said. No, taking the head off you still may not be able to tell which are bent. But a quick spin in a valve grinder will show it, so make friends with someone in a machine shop. My take;
1. remove head, fix/change valves, clean up seats, replace head gasket, drive car.
2. get a used motor and swap it in
3. swap to V-6 or V-8
4. make real power with an 8 valve. Your car had 160 hp approx IIRC; it is relatively easy to make over 200 reliably, and there are quite a few DD's with over 300 whp. Some... unbelievable. One 940 in WA has 502 whp and is a DD. But that guy is a true genius.
