Please help me revive 760 so it doesn't get junked! 700 1988

Hey everyone,

I am visiting my parents, who live on the opposite coast (Boston), and am trying to revive the 88 760 that's been collecting dust in their garage for at least 6 years. My mother claims that various mechanics have deemed it a lost cause (after taking her money, of course), and are advising her to junk it. One enterprising guy "offered" to haul it away for her. I'm not so sure. Here's what I know:

- It has a nearly-brand new Volvo battery, and cranks strong. Electrical accessories work, and I've checked all fuses in the dash (I don't if there are others)

- It has gas. It's near empty, but I personally put in a fresh gallon today.

- One of the mechanics that looked at the car said it needed a new alternator, which he installed. No idea what came of that at the time it was done.

- Mom says it has always had an electrical leak, so the car has been stored with the battery disconnected.

If this were my Miata, V70, or 260, I'd have my garage full of tools and would start exploring air, fuel, spark. But I'm not familiar with the mechanical layout here and I have to buy any tools I might need. So, can anyone help me figure out how to get thing running? I just want to prove that it's not a total loss.

As a plus, if there's anyone in the Boston metro area who wants to take a look, I'd be much obliged.

Thanks!
