I wouldn't think so. But you might have a burned valve.
I don't think 0.018" is too tight a clearance for a B18. Lots of guys are running B20s
at that clearance and doing OK.
Are you getting 'pinking' under heavy load, especially at low speeds?
That might be related to ignition timing.
You should be VERY careful how you set the valve clearance though to make sure you actually DO have the full 0.018" clearance. I usually go over mine a couple times to make sure.
If your clearance is getting less, that is a sure sign of valve seat recession.
If I were you I would check the lift on all the valves to make sure you don't have a cam headed south. There seems to have been a rash of those lately.
Normally that shows up as reduced performance and in the case of lost exhaust lobes,
backfiring through the intake.
