Is it transmission or suspension? 200 1991

I can't figure out whether my 240's problem is transmission or suspension-related and need your help. Automatic shifts very smoothly, even at 200,000 miles. Since I live on a mountain, I flush the fluid every 25,000 - 30,000 miles. So I don't think that burnt of low fluid is an issue.

Here are the symptoms: when the tranny is cold, shifting from reverse into drive is fine. Of course, the car is fully stopped when I shift. When the car warms up, the shift from reverse into drive produces a noticable noise (thump). Likewise the car is fully stopped. So this problem is not caused by abuse. The thump sounds and feels like it is coming from the back of the car.

Tranny or suspension? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
George
