Hi,
I'm reasonably new to the DIY car game so bear with me if I don't explain things to well, thanks...
I acquired for free a 89 240 DL from a friend who was leaving the island and figured what better way to learn something and fill some knowledge gaps than to (attempt to) fix it myself. It was running, barely, but would dump oil and smoke as soon as it ran for a bit. Figuring out where all the oil was coming from was pretty simple as it was all over the firewall and back of the engine. After doing some reading I found out about the 'rear cam plug' that wasn't there. Ok good, so I recently succeeded at replacing that along with the Flame Trap that allegedly is the major cause of the pressure build-up required to blow out the cam plug. Small successes!
Now the car runs fine along the flats, but when I head uphill or put the engine under a heavier load the temperature starts to rise above the 'mid gauge' area where it usually sits, and I'm pretty sure it would totally overheat if it was continued to be pushed.
Any suggestions of where to start looking? I read some things that may suggest the head gasket, but there is no oil in the coolant, or smoking exhaust on cold startup (I'm told these are sure signs of the head gasket being blown).
