Loud, irritating, plastic noise from inside dash 200

Hi folks...

My 1986 240GL has a noise coming from the dash. It sounds like it's coming from the clock area. It's difficult to describe the sound. It happens once every couple of minutes. It's difficult to describe the sound, but it's kind of like when a rock hits the windshield - but it's a more "plasticky" sound than that. It's high pitched enough, that if you're not expecting it, you think something has hit the windscreen.

I think it only happens when the car is moving, but I'll have to check that to be sure.

In the meantime, has anyone come across this before?
