I've lost power 200 1993

I am troubled by a sudden driveabiltiy issue on my 93 240. The problem came on suddenly while driving in a torential downpour, but persits the next day after everything is dry. The car starts and will intially rev freely in park, but has lost power above idle. While driving at idle, or slightly above idle, I get no acceleration, and the engine will occasionally pop and normally accelaerate for a second, then retrun to the no power condition, pop, acclerate, etc.... Additionally, I notice the vacuum assist for the brakes will go away when I step on the gas, but will return when I take my foot off the gas. I have no fault codes showing aftr clearing codes stored from unpluggin the AMM. Unplugging the AMM meter resulted in the car running worse. I am wondering about thermal shock to the cat from deep water, perhpas resluting in internal blockage. I though I would post what seems like very specific symptoms in case someone could shed light from experience....

Thank You
