5 speed question and rambling commentary 200 1993

After an 11 year hiatus, I am thinking of returning the fold and buying another 240. I had a 1988 DL with a 5 speed, and I hate to say it but that car was slow as Christmas and you had to shift out of 1st gear at 10 mph. The 1993 I am looking at has a 5 speed. Should I except the same exciting performance and gear ratios with the newer manual? Is there anyway to change the ratios via another rear differential? Are there any reports or essays done on this subject that I might read?

Two other things:

My old '88 now has 280K and is still being driven by the person I sold it to.

When we got married, my wife had a '90 gold 240 w/auto and sunroof (wish to heck we kept it.) It was the fastest Volvo I had ever seen. Come to find out, someone had stuck a pipe through the cat and monkeyed with the O2 sensors. It still passed Nashville emissions testing!

Thanks!
Rob
