odd whirling noise from in-tank fuel pump? 200

greetings all,

trying to fix up my '88 240 wagon to pass on to my mom. thought i'd gone through most everything when i get this occasional whirling noise from in-tank fuel pump that is very audible when driving, though unpredictable when it does or does not annoy.

about a year ago i replaced a several inch rubber hose that connects to the unit to send fuel along the line that had fallen off.

is this sign of needing to replace the in-tank pump or something else?

thanks in advance!
