trans? 200 1991

I was driving to work this evening and was cut off, as I went to lock up the brakes, my auto trans shifter started to make a hideous clack buzz sound, I pulled over to the side and ended up putting the tranny in neutral. In a few minutes it quit, I put it back into drive and left, then it would repeat, usually when I hit an uneven spot in the road. The only other time i heard this was a month ago when i was driving on brick streets. Could this be tranny mounts? thanks
