Glad you got 'er running. In '88 that fuse does no more than fuel injection, and the holders with 12 Ga. pigtails are not a problem because the length of the pigtail is short. That red lead is metric, and yes, it seems to be just a bit thicker than our 12 American.

A genuine Volvo/Bosch alternator is usually worth more dead than most of the aftermarket rebuilts being sold at chain auto parts stores, in my most humble opinion. Keep your old one or get it repaired or checked at a local auto electric shop in lieu of the "spray and pray" Autozone/Pep Boys unit.
