Eliminate the Cat? 200 1993

Any opinion on replacing the cat with a straight pipe? Due to it's age, my '93 is now exempt from emissions testing and the cat has several small cracks along the various welds (and the minor exhaust leaks that go along with them) as well as along the seam/weld where the o2 sensor enters the pipe, I'm mainly interested in any negative effects on performance which might result from removing the cat. I'd really like to fix the leaks (and stop the noise) before the cold weather sets in.
