With the information you have given us, the problem could be almost anything. For instance, are you sure your ignition components are in good working order? That is, spark plugs, wires, ignition rotor and distributor cap. If you haven't changed your air filter lately, it's a good idea to do this as well. If you know these common wear items are good, you can move on to more complicated things.

On my own car, this behavior would incite me to clean the throttle body and the idle air control valve.
