240 fan belts 200 1987

I've changed the set of belts on 240's several times. Each time I remove the fan and cowling to do it, usually because I have some other purpose in there.

Just curious, is it possible to change that set of belts without removing the fan and cowling? In other words, can you just maneuver the belts over the fan and work them down under? Don't want to spend all day cursing if someone has already done it or not done it.

My last fiasco: The bottom bolt on the alternator BROKE- the one that is 6 inches long. The alternator tipped up and the fan hub ground nearly off the carriage bolt at the top of the alternator. One belt shredded and one stayed on. I limped in over 40 miles- a true testament to the 240's ability to get you there.
