Pushing trip odo reset breaks odometer gear - new rule? 200

Today I pushed the trip reset - with the car stopped - on a 240 w/ a working odometer and the odometer was inoperable when I drove away. I removed the unit and a chunk was missing out of the gear - as is typical.

My rule had been to not reset the odo w/ the car moving. I'm amending that to not using the reset at all unless I know the car has a newer gear. I don't think the fragile older plastic can take it.
