245 Compressor "Grind' 200 1991

I have a '91 245 with a nonfunctioning A/C. I found a large hole in the drier to compressor hose and replaced that, and re-charged the system, hoping that this would bring the unit back to life. It's been years since it's worked correctly.

Unfortunately, the compressor won't engage. No signal from the switch so I jumped the feed wire to the compressor directly to the battery and the clutch engaged, but with the engine running I only hear a grinding between plates.

So I was hoping you could help. First, best way to diagnose the A/C switch / wires, and second, how can I get the clutch to engage, or do you believe this is a dead compressor?

Thanks for your thoughts.
