965 brake lights brighter but bulb failure lights... what to do? 900 1997

The tail and brake lights on my daily driver, the 965, are much smaller than those on the S/90 wifemobile. But for the high-level brake light, it sometimes hard to see that the brakes are on.

When I got a right side tail light aftermarket, I saw that it had the connections and attaching place for a RH fog light. I decided that I have almost never used the rear fog light (Houston and elsewhere in Texas) so they could be converted to additional brake lights.

Disconnected the left side fog light wire. Put in a wire from the brake light to the fog light location. Put in a 1156-type LED bulb. On the right side, did the same connecting wire. Found that there is a wire there for a RH fog light, even though the Volvo light fixture has no hole for such a light.

Hooked everything up, tested the additional and regular brake lights - great. Then I got in to drive away, and - click! - step on brakes and got the bulb failure light AND a clunk from a relay behind the ashtray.

Options that I see. (1) Put a 1156-type LED in the high-level brake light. (2) Change the original brake/tail light bulbs to 1157-type bulbs. (3) Use the fog-light wiring but connect it to the lead from the brake light switch ahead of the rear-located bulb failure relay. (4) #1 plus #2.

What do you think of my options? Will any work? Do you have any other ideas?

Thanks for your reading this post.

Regards.

Bob
