Impending fuel pump failure? 700 1992

Today my 745 didn't want to start after being parked for 5 minutes. Just cranked. It usually always starts right up. I tried giving it gas, but all I noticed was that it cranked a little faster with the throttle open. I checked under the hood and didn't notice any gas smell, so concluded I wasn't getting any fuel. I looked for the fuel pump fuse (#1) and it was okay, so I put it back. Now it started right up, but the Check Engine light stayed on until the next time I started it.

I gather this is a Regina car with the single in-tank fuel pump. I have partial service records for it from a previous owner and I don't see any mention of replacing the fuel pump. Do you suppose it's overdue? The car has about 492,000 km (306,000 miles) on it. Should I be ordering a replacement so I'll only be off the road a couple of days instead of a week if it finally craps out? Is there any way of testing its health? Is there a way to check what the CE light was for without special tools?
