rebuilt caliper hitting disc 200 1991

I mounted a rebuilt (Cardone) LF caliper, and it is hitting the disc! It would appear that the it is not centered around the disc.
If I was to add 1mm washers between the caliper and the strut, it would be about centered, ie it is too far outboard, and the wing which holds the pads in place is hitting the inboard side of the disc.
I seem to remember having this problem once before.
But I cannot understand how it is happenning. Surely this is a rebuilt Volvo caliper. How could the mountings be different? Every 240 uses the same caliper (except for the number of lines coming in, ABS vs non ABS)
WOuld it be OK to add some 1mm washers between the caliper and the strut mounting surface?
